Baseball Hitting During Practice

By Jeff Wise

Baseball hitting is the best part of practice. At least that's what I thought during my 14 years of playing. No matter who my coach was, practice always ran in the same order. After stretching and warm-ups, we participated in fielding drills, running drills, game situations and lastly, hitting practice.

This was what I looked forward to during each practice. Hitting created such an adrenaline rush for me. I wanted to hit good, not only to prepare for games but to also impress my coaches. Hitting the ball is such a great feeling that players want to feel over and over again.

During this portion of practice, players have two options. They can either swing at everything that is thrown or they can wait patiently and only swing at the good pitches. I think waiting is more beneficial because it better prepares you for games. If you can tell the difference between a good pitch and a bad pitch, you'll be a better player.

At each baseball hitting practice, try to hit at least five pitches to each of the main areas on the field, such as the left, center and right fields. Also be sure to practice at least two bunts, one to third base and the other to first base. Be sure to look for outfield pitches too. These different hits will help prepare you for any situation during a game.

As you practice, make sure you become familiar with the strike zone. Don't swing at anything outside of the strike zone. One more thing you should remember is to remain confident during practice. Be serious and focus on what you're doing. This will help you during games and it will show your coaches how dedicated you are.

If you treat baseball hitting practice as a time to really improve your game then you will be a better player. It is good to have fun, especially since hitting is fun, but you should also take your job seriously.
