Coaches Should Use Baseball Videos

By Jeff Wise

In addition to practicing on the field and running drills, coaches should use baseball videos as a way to train their players. Good videos give players a visual example of the correct way to play the sport. Make sure, though, that the videos you show will help players instead of confusing them. While there are many great videos available, there are also some bad ones.

Look for videos that give simple instructions in the areas of base running, fielding and hitting. The directions should be brief and spelled out so that players don't misinterpret the information. When videos are too long, players forget a lot of the instructions and have a hard time at the next practice.

For long videos, break them into parts to show players at different meetings. After they watch a video about one area, like hitting, then let them physically practice those hitting skills before teaching them a new skill. A player won't be good at the skill until they've put it to practice.

Before showing videos to kids, they should be reviewed by the coach. You don't want to show players a video that will confuse them or hurt their playing. Reviewing beforehand will also give coaches ideas for how to handle the next practice.

Showing your players Major League highlights is also helpful for them to learn. They may not be able to mimic what the professionals do, but at least they'll learn the difference between the right and wrong way to play. It's even a good idea to film your players during practice or games so they can see what they're doing right or what areas need improvement.

If you are a coach, incorporate more baseball videos into practice. You're sure to see major changes in your players and they will be able to visually see the right way to play baseball. Those who are visual learners will especially appreciate this form of instruction.
