Timing and How To Hit the Baseball

By Jeff Wise

If you want to be a great baseball hitter, you have to be good at timing. This is a skill that requires practice but is necessary for success. You will never hit the baseball well until the right timing becomes second nature.

Hitting is a difficult feat to accomplish; one of the most difficult in all of sports. You're holding a skinny bat and expected to hit a little ball flying at extremely fast speeds. Even among the professionals, if you hit during three out of 10 at-bats you are considered an excellent hitter.

If you don't learn the right timing, you will never be able to hit the ball well. Instead, you'll get lots of strikes and outs. The way to learn timing is to first keep your eyes on the ball all the time. You should be watching the ball as soon as it is thrown until you either make contact or it passes the plate.

Practicing the transfer of weight, also known as the trigger, is another way to help players with timing. Players have different trigger styles, so you just have to figure out what style you like the best. Transferring your weight from front to back to front again will help you determine the exact time you need to swing at the ball.

Hitting off a tee is a great way to practice timing. It helps you practice the trigger to know exactly when you need to swing. Next, try practicing with a soft toss drill. This requires someone tossing you the ball from a short distance. As you progress, real live batting practice will help you perfect timing. During practice, remember not to open your front shoulder or hips too early, as this will mess up your timing.

Once you've figured out timing and practice it often, it will become natural. You won't have to think about it anymore. You'll just know when to swing. After you've mastered the swing you can then work on other areas necessary to hit the baseball.
