High School Sports Keep On Giving

By Rosie Tanner

Although lacking the big money of college and of course professional national and local leagues, high school sports has a unique appeal all of it's own as promising young athletes compete to show their potential and skills, and just enjoy themselves. Many of these athletes will not make the big time and fans often get to see a rawer and more pure version of their favorite sports than offered by the pros.

Although it is yet to penetrate the national consciousness in the same way as the domestic sports at the adult level, soccer at this level has long been the most popular sport. As it's popularity as a professional sport rises in the states the young people lining up for high school sports may be the soccer stars of the future. The game has a massive fanbase at this level. More so than any other sport.

Baseball is seen by many as the most American of all pastimes. The combination of nail biting tension and relaxed fun makes watching the game for many the perfect afternoons entertainment. See the future stars competing for glory and enjoy a more raw and pure version of the game than the sometimes over indulged and bloated professional game.

Football the country's favorite sport and it is easy to see why. All of the legends of the game who we see performing in the NFL be they kickers, tight ends, quarterbacks and even referees started plying their trade in the high school leagues before moving on to bigger and better things. The non-professional nature of the game allows far more trick plays and so on to be used than in a pro game.

Running and other track and field events are also a great sport to follow at this level with some truly incredible athletes for their age displaying their skills. It is worth remembering that this system of competition has proved incredibly successful creating countless athletes who have gone on to compete and triumph at the highest levels of sport such as the Olympics and other athletics meets.

For more northern readers, the junior Ice Hockey leagues are claimed by many to be the most competitive in all of the sport. With the violence of the professional game cut to some degree the audience is treated to a more skillful and elegant game free from the thuggery that so often ruins the upper levels of the sport.

The age restrictions applied to these sports often adds to rather than takes away from their appeal, the fact that they are high school students rather than professional athletes often provides a very different set of motivations for the players.

To sum up, high school sports are often exciting, unpredictable and nail-biting events in many cases as exciting as or even more exciting than their professional counterparts. Even for those without a direct interest in the teams or the games it can provide incredible entertainment.
