Patience and How To Hit a Baseball Better

By Jeff Wise

To learn how to hit a baseball better, there is one thing you should know. You must be selective with pitches and swing at strikes only. I see a lot of players swinging at bad pitches that aren't even over the plate. If you are selective you are sure to hit a baseball better.

Many questions can stem from this topic. What about balls thrown in the strike zone that are in the upper left corner or the low, inside pitch? Should you swing at everything with less than two strikes on you?

Whatever situation you face, the answer is to patiently wait for the pitch that feels right. If you can follow that rule, you're sure to be a better hitter. For example, if your goal is to move a runner over, it is best to wait for an outside pitch that will allow you to hit to the opposite field.

Another situation is when you're bunting. If you're a left-handed hitter and want to bunt towards the third base, the easiest balls to hit are those down the middle of the plate or on the outside. Sometimes your coach will give you the sign for a bunt. Unless it's a suicide squeeze, he probably doesn't expect you to bunt the very next pitch no matter what. You can still wait for the right pitch so you can get the job done.

If you are selective and only hit the right pitches, you will learn how to hit the baseball better. The best hitters have learned how to maintain a calm approach at the plate because they simply wait for the right pitch to come to them. Even if you have two strikes on you, don't worry or stress because the next pitch could be the perfect one for your situation. Once you see the right pitch, feel free to attack it with confidence.
