Getting Baseball Gear That's Right For You

By Athena Hunter

In order to play your best, it's important to have baseball gear that's right for you. When selecting your equipment you need to consider several factors like what position you play, your age, and your size. And of course, you will need to take your budget into consideration. Here are some helpful guidelines for choosing appropriate baseball equipment.

The baseball glove is one of the most fundamental pieces of equipment you'll need. Your position will dictate the kind of glove you will need. You'll need a glove that's larger than average if you play first base so you can easily catch balls thrown from a variety of angles. An outfielder's glove is longer so it's easier to catch fly balls, on the other hand. If you're a pitcher, you need a glove with closed webbing so batters can't see what type of pitch you're going to throw. Catchers need wide gloves with extra padding, as they have to withstand the impact of fastballs and other pitches for the whole game.

In many leagues for young players, aluminum bats are not allowed to protect the players from injury. You should look for a bat that is exactly right for you, so that you can swing freely and comfortably.

A pitching target can be a valuable tool for the pitcher to practice on. You'll want one of these simple devices if you don't often have a practice partner in your spare time as it can help you improve your aim and your technique. Rawlings, for example, makes a device called the Comeback, which is useful for practicing fielding as well as pitching. The fact that the angle can be adjusted for grounders and fly balls makes this the perfect device for infield, outfield and pitching positions. You will find that having the right equipment of your own will make increasing your skill set easier for you.

Aside from conforming to the regulations of your league, you want to make sure all your gear is just right for your size, style of play and position. Some equipment, such as your glove, has to be made specifically for your position, as a catcher's mitt is going to be very different from a first baseman's. The above points can be referred to when choosing baseball gear, though in many cases you may have to experiment with different brands and styles to find what's right for you.
