Baseball Confidence Goes a Long Way

By Jeff Wise

If you want to become a good baseball hitter, you need good instruction, lots of practice and, believe it or not, baseball confidence. It is nearly impossible to be a good hitter if you don't have a healthy level of confidence. With it, you can be sure you will play the best you possibly can.

Learning the proper techniques to hitting is the first step to becoming a successful hitter. This instruction can come from your dad, your coaches or baseball hitting books. My dad was great at teaching me how to hit and he also gave me a few books to read. Putting this information into practice I was able to play in the 15-year-old all-star game and when on to have a successful baseball career in high school and college.

Without the confidence, though, I could not have made it that far. Confidence is trusting that you can get the job done at the plate. After all the practice and hard work, you truly know what you're doing. Even if you make mistakes, which you will, that confidence won't be compromised because you believe in yourself.

With a good amount of confidence, you are more likely to hit with power and assurance. You will be able to hit the ball to different areas of the field and will get more runs. Mentally believing in your capabilities will truly go a long way.

It's a good idea that you regularly check your level of confidence, though. You don't want to become arrogant or cocky during practice or on the field. This will only set you up for disappointment, as mistakes are bound to happen. Arrogance can also turn other players away and make you an outcast on the team. Instead, strive to be humble as well as confident.

If you watch professional baseball players, you can see this humble confidence. It's amazing how they can ignore the screams from the crowd and focus intently on hitting the ball. They are calm and fearless. They have great confidence, but when they strike out you also notice that it doesn't crush them. They just walk back to the batter's box until it's time to get on the field.

While playing baseball, be sure to have fun and never give up. This sport is meant to be enjoyed and with the right amount of baseball confidence you are sure to enjoy it more. Remember that baseball is as much a mental sport as it is a physical sport.
