Important Baseball Safety Recommendations

By Michael Bastadio Xavier

Baseball isn't typically considered a dangerous sport like football but there are still some safety concerns to be aware of. There are a number of ways that injuries can occur, which include being hit by a ball, accidents with bats and collisions with other players. The article below will take a somewhat in-depth look at means for protecting yourself from injury or accident during baseball play.

You can increase safety in baseball by improving communication. For example, players in the field must be taught to be clear about communicating when a pop up or fly ball comes their way. Players must be taught to call out when they're going for a ball, especially if other players are in the vicinity. At times, two players may both call for a ball, but usually one will call it out first, and when they call it out this at least gives other players an idea of where they are.

The bases in this game are one danger we don't always consider dangerous but they are. If a player slides into a stationary base too hard it's pretty easy to injure a leg or foot. A head, hand or arm injury is imminent for those who may slide headfirst into a stationary base. These bases called "breakaway" bases are just that, broken apart as the player slides into them making them a good solution to this injury danger. The base, however, will remain stable under normal conditions. If they are not already on board with these breakaway bases you need to be suggesting that they board the train. Besides that, players need to practice proper sliding techniques and watch for dangerous bases.

Running the bases is another area of baseball where safety must be considered. A player has many places to err when running the bases. Running around the bases requires you to constantly change directions, which makes you more vulnerable to injuries. A base runner has to focus on several things at once -deciding what base to land on, avoiding being tagged out and watching out for players who may be in his path. A runner can easily be reckless or move in an awkward way in the heat of the game, so it's important that players learn good form when running. Of course, injuries can be minimized by players staying in good condition and running or other aerobic activity off the field. It's a good idea to include base running as part of practice, so players know how to run without injuring themselves.

As you can see safety in baseball is nothing more than a matter of paying attention to details. Protective gear is important for both play and practice as is an awareness of what's happening at any given moment sometimes players need to be reminded of this. The best thing you can do for your own safety (aside from wearing protective gear is to have a keen awareness of your surroundings.
