Baseball Safety Made Simple

By Dana Cain

Baseball, like any sport, has certain safety principles that should always be followed by all players In some ways, the fact that baseball is not a contact sport can make it more hazardous in that players aren't always prepared for accidents That's why it's essential that everyone has the protective equipment required by their position and follows the proper guidelines What follows are some sensible safety tips that can keep players healthy and safe

Communication is an important part of safety in any sport For example, players in the field must be taught to be clear about communicating when a pop up or fly ball comes their way Calling a fly ball is something that should be done at all times, as otherwise collisions can occur Of course, confusion can still occur if two players both call for it at the same time, but at least then they'll be aware of each other's presence and can hopefully sort it out That's why coaches should instruct players who should cover which parts of the field to avoid confusion Both infielders and outfielders must learn to keep an eye on other players as well as the ball for safety reasons

Bats are one of the most potentially hazardous items on the baseball field Bats should only be swung when necessary during games and practices If someone isn't up to bat or on deck, they shouldn't be swinging a bat in the dugout or on the field If you see someone holding a bat, always stay far enough away to avoid injury if the player isn't paying attention and starts practicing his swing Any player holding a bat should always look to make sure no one is nearby before swinging it Bats should always be treated with respect, both by the person holding or swinging one and other players, who need to keep their distance

Running the bases is another area of baseball where safety must be considered There are many possible pitfalls when running the bases To begin with, you don't run straight ahead, but around the shape of the infield, which can make it easier to trip or sprain something Then there are players on the opposing team to watch out for, and the runner may be uncertain as to whether to stop at a base or continue to the next one Good base running is an essential skill, both for playing well and for staying safe during games The better a player's overall fitness, of course, the less chance that an injury will occur when base running Coaches should drill players on base running skills so that they know how to do this safely and effectively

If safety guidelines are always followed, baseball can be enjoyed with far fewer injuries and problems That's one of the responsibilities of coaches, especially when coaching kids' leagues, as younger players may have to be reminded to wear the right gear and follow safety guidelines While no sport can be 100% safe, if you remember these points, baseball can be made a lot safer for everyone

There is a fine line between being soar and having an injury. Unfortunately, many players and coaches do not distinguish between the two until it's already to late. The worst part is, most of the time baseball injuries can be avoided with proper communication. Being product of the baseball system myself, there is an interesting dynamic between baseball players, their teammates, and their coaches.

At the end of the day, no one wants to miss an opportunity for playing time, and no one wants to catch riff for not playing through a little pain. Put the two together, and the lines of communication are closed before anyone ever says a word. With baseball injuries, you never receive answers to questions you don't ask, and you never build trust if you don't show you care! Baseball players, will never heal if no one knows what's wrong and you could be causing permanent damage to you body making your injury worse than it really has to be!

For example, I had the privilege of meeting with a 15 year old player I had never seen play before. He had been experience arm trouble, and at the request of someone close to me I happily took the time to help the young baseball player. Now, I am the first to say I am not a doctor, but there is a reason why you speak in mostly questions at the doctor's office. To get all the answers, you must ask all of the questions.

If you arm is bothering you, let him know what you are planning do for rehab and let him know your going to focus twice as hard on using your legs in the drills for the day. Also ask him what you can do to help work around the current injury. Chances are that your baseball coach will give you suggestion and work with you to get you healthy again. If he doesn't and he seems bothered by your injury, it's time to find a new team and new coach to play for. At the end of the day, if you can't perform your baseball training drills correctly, then you training in the wrong direction!

Obviously this type of issues doesn't completely resolve itself overnight, but you can take preventive measures moving forward to correct the issues and get back to full strength. There are plenty of batting training, pitching training, and fielding training drills to pull from. All it takes is a quick modification and small amount of though to design a game plan to help players avoid further injury while still participating in a quality baseball training session.

As for the young player, we were able to figure out the root of his pain and establish a game plan for improvement with a quick 5 minute conversation. His baseball pitching mechanics were a bit unorthodox putting a tremendous amount of strain on his shoulder. I still have never seen him throw a ball! Through questions and quick explanations of proper mechanics, we targeted the issue and he is on the road to recovery.

If you are in pain or you are struggling with something mentally, open the lines of communication and let the healing begin!

Batting Tips for Pro Baseball Tryouts

By Jeff Wise

Many high school baseball players think about the future of their baseball career. Will they play in college? Will they make the Major Leagues? One of the best ways to excel your baseball career is to go to a pro baseball tryout.

Before going to a tryout like this, you should know a few things. In advance, prepare both mentally and physically. Get a lot of sleep the night before, drink lots of water and eat a good breakfast the morning of the tryout. Mentally focus on what you've got to do to have a great tryout. Especially focus on the hitting portion as that is the part that will most impress scouts.

At the practice, don't spend all of your energy on the warm-up or drills. You'll need your energy for hitting. When it's time to hit, be aggressive and try to get near the front of the line. Those who hit first get the best pitches and they're also noticed more. This is not a time to be timid.

When you step up to the plate, get in a comfortable position as quickly as you can. Try to relax, but remember that you don't have much time. Stay calm and hit the ball solid. Don't try to impress the scouts with home runs. Just focus on the mechanics and hit the best you can.

If a scout approaches you, that's fantastic news. But if not, don't worry about it. Just practice more and work on your hitting skills. There should be several pro baseball tryouts you can attend each year.

If you happen to know of any scouts in your area, try to get to know them or at least give them your contact information. Then, if they see you at a tryout they'll remember you and pay attention more. Good networking can greatly benefit your baseball career.

Expert Baseball Principles Every Player Should Be Familiar With

By Frank Woods

As a player or coach in baseball, the more that you know, the more power you have in any situation that comes your way. Physical skills and strategy are the main aspects of the game. Both are just as important as the other. The team has to practice how to hit an play each of their positions. But, they also have to be knowledgeable about what should be done and the priorities of each task at all times. Let us look at a few advanced baseball principles that all the team players should know.

When a batter comes to the plate, the goal will differ based on what the circumstances are. A hitter who is always trying to hit a home run will not be helping the team if the team just needs the runner on first base go to second base. That's why every player should know how to bunt, and when to take a pitch if a walk would be helpful. Generally there are players on all teams who find it difficult to understand this rule and want personal fame above all else. It is important that coaches and managers make players understand that the team is the first priority and personal fame is an afterthought.

One practice everyone should know is tagging up. If there are players on the base and less than two outs, a runner can tag up or run on to the next base once a ball is caught. It is important that you understand that the play cannot run until the after the ball has been caught. This risky move is often done when there's a runner on third base and the ball is hit fairly deeply into the outfield. This can score a run. However, if the outfielder has a good arm, the runner has to be fast if he hopes to score.

Batters can help their team by planning out to hit the ball in a way that will help other runners get to the next base. For example, if there is a player on the first base, the batter should hit the ball into the right field. This way, the runner has a better chance of reaching third base if there's a hit. The right fielder has a longer throw to third base than the left fielder would have if the ball was hit into left field. This is also known as hitting behind the runner. It's something hitters should keep in mind as they swing.

To be an expert when it comes to baseball, you have to do more than memorize a few techniques. You have to know how to apply the strengths of each player on the team and compensate for any weaknesses. In addition to practice that builds upon skills, the players have to talk about the bad and good things of each game. These are a few of the things that can help any player or team get better. The more knowledgeable you are about baseball, the more you will improve and love the game even more.

Expert Football and MLB Picks

By James Thundbridge

As the best and busiest part of the college basketball season begins, many professional and not so professional bettors want to know where they can get free college basketball picks. These complimentary hoops picks will allow those who may not want to spend their afternoons going over every team game by game to get a leg up on their competition.

There are literally hundreds of different sites that allow you to find the kind of picks that you might be looking for. Where a level of difficulty comes in is in trying to decide exactly how you want to use these picks and who you want to go to in using them. While there are tons of different sites you can go to, there are just a few that are actually reputable.

Defensive teams get picked for total yardage gained against them. This includes total passing and total rushing yards. Total offensive points are also counted against the defensive unit. Expert picks take all of these factors into account and then base their pick on the information they have at the time.

Another factor that should always be weighed is how long the site has been around. Most sites that can actually be trusted have been around more than a year and they are comfortable telling their customers that. Sites who actually advertise those who do the picking are also ones that can be better trusted.

Many picks also are based on spreads, over under and straight up methods. Spreads are the total points that experts predict the favorite team will beat the underdog team by. Over under is the total points that the two teams will score combined and the straight up is simply picking who will win and who will lose. Regardless of which method you choose or if you participate in fantasy leagues, the competition of the games are exciting. Free MLB Picks For Everybody

By Michelle Edwards

Baseball continues to be an extremely popular game. Other sports have many followers, but has continued to be compelling sport for its fans. People are constantly trying to keep up with what is happening with favorite teams and may use online publications, free MLB picks, and other resources to help make following baseball even more exciting. Regardless of how one follows the sport, the long journey that is each season can make the sport even more interesting.

One of baseball's appealing features is how intertwined it is with statistics. In no other sport do numbers tell a story like they do in baseball. So much can be surmised about a game just by taking a look at the box score. Even if a fan was not able to watch the previous night's game, the box score tells as much of a story as does the game report itself.

On a more personal level, baseball is a sport that your average person can relate to physically. Many other professional sports require that its participants be tall or large or both. Baseball, on the other hand, does not require brute strength or extreme size to be successful. Many Major League players are less than six feet tall, for example, and have enjoyed great success at the highest level.

There is also a generational link that exists with baseball that is not necessarily present in other games. Many people can remember throwing a baseball to a parent. That kind of interaction does not always happen in other sports. It may, but it does not always create as deep a memory. This bonding experience may be one explanation for the enduring attractiveness of baseball.

Since the baseball season begins in the Spring, people often associate it with a fresh start. There is something about the change in weather that generally gives people a renewed hope. As this coincides with the beginning of the season, that hope is often equated with baseball.

The rhythm and pace of a baseball season allows people to check in with it in a relaxed fashion. Tips On Buying The Right Baseball Gear

By Quinn Harris

Baseball equipment comes in a variety of types which can differ from person to person as far as what is needed. Before you purchase your first gear item it's important to know what your team or league will and won't allow as well as what position you intend to play. Below you will see a few of the most general principals to consider when purchasing baseball gear.

The ball is the general object of the game itself. Baseballs don't often live very long in the world of major league games in which you are likely to go through several dozen of them. Because it's likely for these balls to be either lost or damaged it's a great idea to purchase them in bulk. Most players like to have extra balls to practice with in their spare time despite having balls provided during practice and games. Even though you probably don't need to have major league quality balls for practice a good quality ball is nonetheless important.

Your catcher position is the most difficult job in baseball or so it is believed. The catcher is the one most likely to get hit with a bat or a blisteringly fast ball as he crouches for hours behind home plate. Just in case a ball or a bat for that matter gets the better of you it's imperative that you be protected with shin guards, groin cups and chest protection. Because you'll be stuck wearing this gear for hours on end it's important that it fit properly and be as comfortable as possible.

A pitching target can be a valuable tool for the pitcher to practice on. If you have a lack of partners to practice with this can be a helpful tool for improving your aim and technique. One device you might consider is the Rawlings Comeback device which offers you some great fielding practice in addition to your pitching practices. The fact that the angle can be adjusted for grounders and fly balls makes this the perfect device for infield, outfield and pitching positions. Increase your skill set with the practice you'll get by owning your own equipment.

If you want to play your best the above information is important to consider when purchasing baseball equipment that's right for you. You may find it necessary to experiment with some equipment in order to find what works best for you. It might even be necessary for you to have multiple types of gear if you like to play different positions. Find the best gear for you by using the above information as a guideline when you are shopping for baseball gear.

Ulama - the Mesoamerican Ball Game

By Robert Nickel

Played for thousands of years, the Mesoamerican ballgame was first introduced by the pre-Columbian peoples of Mesoamerica and has been played since at least 1000 B.C. The sport had many reiterations over the ages and was played in many different regions. The modern version of the ballgame is called Ulama.

Ancient ball courts have been discovered across Mesoamerica and have a wide range of sizes and styles. These courts have been found from Nicaragua to Arizona. The one commonality that all the courts share is that they all have long narrow alleys with side-walls against which the balls could bounce.Large ball courts have been found at Copan, Uxmal, Xochicalco, Monte Alban, Toluquilla and at the Chichen Itza sites.

While the actual rules of the game are unknown, the basic premise was similar to some modern ball games. The object was to keep the ball in play, by bouncing the ball off various parts of the body. There was a later addition of stone rings that were placed high on the walls through which the ball could pass in order to score points.

Typically, players struck the ball with their hips, although some versions allowed the use of forearms, rackets, bats, or hand-stones. The ball was made of solid rubber and weighed up to 4 kg (9 lbs) or more. The size of the ball differed greatly over time or according to the different versions played.

It is believed that the ballgame had very strong ritualistic aspects, Popular belief is that competing teams from other cities or regions would engage in ceremonial matches. The captain or leader of the losing team could be decapitated and have their head placed on a spike as an offering to the gods. The game was also part of the everyday culture of Mesoamerica and was enjoyed by women and children.

The origins of the game come from the Popol Vuh ("Book of the People"). The Popol Vuh's prominent features are its creation myth, its diluvian suggestion, its genealogies and its epic tales of the Hero Twins Hunahpu and Xbalanque.

In one version, the Hero Twins find the ballgame equipment in their father's house and begin playing, but annoy the Lords of Xibalba. The twins are summoned to play the ballgame amidst trials and dangers. In a notable version, Hunahpu is decapitated by bats and his brother must use a squash as Hunahpu's substitute head until his real one, now used as a ball by the Lords, can be retrieved and placed back on Hunahpu's shoulders.

While some scholars debate the origins of the game or the significance it has played in the Mesoamerican cultures, all agree that it is the oldest recorded sporting event and that its influence can be seen in even today in all modern ball games.

Advice for Choosing the Best Baseball Equipment

By Ryan Kolfax

Anyone playing baseball will be able to improve their game faster if they have the right equipment. Certain gear is fairly standard, while items such as gloves will differ depending on the position you play. Having top quality equipment that fits can give you the extra edge on the field that can make all the difference.

As with any sport, the equipment you use when playing baseball can make a real difference. Players won't be at their best if gear like their glove isn't perfectly suited for them.

No matter what position you play cleats are important to speed and agility as well as overall ability to play well. Your cleats need to offer you not only comfort but also a lot of traction. Baseball fields vary depending on weather and time of year so you need an all weather shoe that can handle these varying conditions. There are a number of different options in cleats from low to high tops and rubber to metal cleats so be sure you know what your league allows.

Because pitchers and fielders are more prone to injury when hitters use metal bats, quite a few leagues have banned their use. The idea is to find the kind of bat that is appropriate for you, and that gives your swing the most control and power.

While certain equipment is not a requirement, it can greatly reduce the chances that you'll suffer an injury. For example, you may not think you need wrist guards, but they can be very helpful. It's easy to get hit in the wrist by a pitch when you're at bat, or get an injury when sliding or diving to make a catch.

Not only do batting gloves help improve your grip but they also absorb the impact when you make contact with the ball when batting. Blisters and calluses can be quite painful over time but gloves can help protect your hands. Having a firm grip gives you a big advantage when swinging the bat. Make sure your batting gloves don't fit too tight when buying them. These are a type of baseball equipment that may not be considered essential, but they can make a big difference in your performance as a hitter.

Those who want to improve their hitting skills will want to consider purchasing a batting tee. Get The Gear That Can Make Rather Than Break Your Baseball Game

By Erin Song

Baseball gear comes in many forms, and what is needed varies a lot from one player to the next. Before you run out and buy gear you need to consider the position you play as well as the particular rules for your league or team. There are however some generalizations you can make and we'll look at those here.

The whole game of baseball revolves around one object -the baseball itself. A typical baseball doesn't have a long lifespan in fact some games will use several dozen at least. It's always a good idea to have several extras on hand since they can be easily damaged by a hard swing or perhaps lost in a number of ways. Even though you won't need your own balls for games and official practices it's a good idea to have some on hand for unofficial practices on your own time. It's not necessary to have major league quality balls for practice but you will want good ones that are leather or high quality synthetic material.

The catcher is believed to have the most difficult job in baseball. If you are the catcher you spend a good amount of time crouching behind the plate and risking getting hit with the bat or catching fast balls headed your way at high speeds. Catchers also need shin guards, chest protection, and groin cups since you never know when a wayward ball or the end of a bat is going to land a hit in a sensitive area. You also want to make sure all your protective gear fits comfortably, as you'll be wearing it for hours on end.

For a pitcher, a pitching target is an essential piece of practice equipment. This is a simple device that will improve your aim and style when you don't have a practice partner to work with. Rawlings makes one called the Comeback which is helpful for fielding practices as well as pitching too. The angle can be adjusted to practice catching fly balls or grounders. This type of device is useful, then, for infielders, outfielders and pitchers alike. Steady practice is the best way to increase your baseball skills and having adequate equipment makes this goal even easier.

Baseball gear, as we've seen in this article, comes in many forms, and it's important that you find equipment that's right for you. It may take some time to get to know what is perfect for you as an individual. If you play more than one position, you may need a wider variety of gear, such as the right glove for each position. You should consider the above information as you seek out baseball gear.

Advanced Baseball Strategies Utilized by the Pros

By Jama Reichmann

Baseball is a sport that puts together physical skills with a lot of difficult strategies that are different from one played game to another. How the game is played will depend on a lot of things such as the score, who is on a base or up to bat and even whether the pitcher is left or right handed. No matter what position you play, you have to play plenty of detail when playing baseball. The following are some techniques that will get you or other players to reach their best performance.

The double play is generally fun to achieve and even though experienced players seem to do it with ease, it is very difficult for inexperienced players to accomplish. To prepare for the double play, which means a runner is on first, the first and third basemen remain where they normally are. The second baseman and shortstop should both get closer to the second base than they normally do. This way, if a ground ball is hit to either of them, the other can cover second base and then throw to first to complete the double play. This is a play that should be regularly practiced in drills.

One particular exercise that all players should know is tagging up. If there are players currently on the bases and there are no more than two outs, a runner can tag up or run to the next base when a fly ball is caught. It is a must that you understand that the player must not start running until the ball has been caught.

If you get behind in the scoring, your key focus is on hitting the ball and not getting struck out. If you are ahead in the scoring, you can pick your pitches and possibly try for pitches that will get a walk. The key item is that hitters always have to take the counts into consideration.

Communication between players can make a big difference during a game. This is really true when it comes to players in the outfield. This is where there can sometimes be uncertainty about which player is going to go after the ball. If players do not correspond with one another in the right way, there will be confusion or issues in the outfield. The center field player gets the most attention. So, the left and right fielders shouldn't intrude into his territory.

You have to know how to use the strengths of each player on the team and makeup for any problems. In addition to practice that builds upon skills, the players have to talk about the bad and good things of each game. These are just a few tips for improving a team or player. The information that you have about baseball, the more you will understand it and get more satisfaction from it.
