How To Choose The Right Baseball Gear For Your Needs

By Tim Minnifield

Baseball equipment comes in a variety of types which can differ from person to person as far as what is needed. You need to know some details before you start buying your gear, such as what your position will be, what your team or league will allow and whether or not there are any gear items that aren't allowed. We'll be taking a closer look at a few of the most basic principles of baseball gear purchases here.

The ball is the general object of the game itself. Baseballs don't often live very long in the world of major league games in which you are likely to go through several dozen of them. Consider buying balls in bulk especially if they are likely to be lost or damaged during play. Most players like to have extra balls to practice with in their spare time despite having balls provided during practice and games. Even though you probably don't need to have major league quality balls for practice a good quality ball is nonetheless important.

It's widely believed that the catcher has the toughest job of all in baseball. If this is your position, you have to crouch behind the plate for hours, risk getting hit with a bat and catch fastballs coming at you at blistering speeds. The gear for this position often includes a full face mask, chest protection and a glove with extra padding among other things. Catchers should have a shin guard, chest protector and cup, because you never know when you'll be hit by a wayward ball or even the tip of a bat. Because you'll find it necessary to wear this gear for long periods of time it's important that it be comfortable and fit properly.

When it comes to clothing, you probably have a uniform, but you also want to pay attention to the clothes you wear in addition to this. If your uncomfortable for any reason, such as being cold, damp or restricted by your clothing, this can adversely affect your quality of play. If you wear a baseball jersey, make sure it's on the large side, as your arms have to be free to swing a bat and run after balls. If everything fits well and you're dressed right for the weather, you can focus on the game and give it your best.

When you choose baseball gear, you want everything to be ideal for your needs, and also conform to your league's rules. Some equipment, such as your glove, has to be made specifically for your position, as a catcher's mitt is going to be very different from a first baseman's. The kind of baseball gear you prefer depends on many factors, and you should always pay attention to how well it performs so you can decide if perhaps changes are necessary.
