Players Need to Know Baseball Hitting Stats

By Jeff Wise

Statisticians go a little crazy with the number of baseball hitting stats. There are way too many for the majority of people to ever remember or care about. Many people get confused, even if they play the sport or are die-hard fans.

If you're just learning about baseball or just starting to play, it's not necessary that you learn all the statistics for baseball hitting. Just knowing the most important are good enough to get you through the game for the rest of your life. Once you know the main stats, keep a record of yours so you can see how you're doing as you play.

Here are a few stats you should know if you don't already.

Batting Average. Abbreviated as AVG, this is the ration of hits to at-bats. If you got a hit three times for every 10 times you stepped up to the plate, you would have a .300 batting average.

Home Runs. If you make it all around the bases then you get a home run. It's abbreviated as HR.

Runs Batted In. You'll hear people talk about RBIs. A player gets an RBI every time a runner scores during your at-bat. Unless, that is, a batter grounds into a double play or reaches on an error.

H - This stands for Hits and it calculates the number of times you get a clean hit.

R. Runs scored by an individual player are also recorded.

AB. This stat tells you how many times you have had an at-bat during the season.

BB - This abbreviation is for Walks, when you are awarded first base for being thrown four balls.

Slugging Percentage. Known as SLG, this tricky stat is calculated as total bases divided by at-bats.

While it's not necessary to know every single baseball hitting stats, these are good to know. You'll become more knowledgeable about the game of baseball and knowing your stats will give you incentive for improvement.
