Performing Well in Baseball When Your Under Pressure

By Thomas Wilson

Whether you are playing in the big leagues or in little league, there are frequently going to be occasions when you are expected to perform under pressure. Take the always popular bottom of the ninth inning, two outs, and your team is down by one run scenario. Do you want to be the batter? The good baseball players would want to be at the plate in pressure situations because of three reasons: they've worked hard, they've got confidence, and they are focused.

Hard work is essential to performing during these kinds of circumstances. If you worked your butt off constantly on your baseball workouts as well as your training programs and you kept your body in the best condition you are ten times more likely to be able to succeed on the baseball field.

Self confidence is another key to performing in these high pressure conditions. With no self-confidence you're far more likely to make an out and not catapult your team to triumph. They know that they can perform. They can imaging themselves hitting the game winning base hit and getting mobbed by their teammates. Then...they do it. It is not just a skill but it's a way of thinking. If you feel you can do it then you probably will. This isn't just a saying...it's actually true!

In addition to having worked hard before hand and self-confidence, for you to perform in vital conditions in addition you have to have focus. Focus is what allows you to forget about your screeming teammates, the opposing team, the fans, and everything else but the baseball coming in your direction. Focus is what will clear your head of all thoughts aside from hitting that ball and scoring the game winning runs!

A mixture of all three of these things is necessary to executing well in stressful situations on the baseball field. Just bear in mind though, that baseball is a game and really should be treated as one. Even if the game means a lot to you, just remember that there will be many more games and many more opportunities to succeed. No matter if you do end up getting the game winning hit, use it as inspiration to improve yourself and work harder.
