2012 Arizona D-Backs Starting Pitcher & Closer Predictions

By Jack Jones

The Arizona Diamondbacks shocked the world in 2011, when they finished the season with a 94-68 record. Before last season, Arizona was dead last in the NL West division with a 65-97 record, but a handful of breakout seasons from key players bolted the Diamondbacks to the top of the National League West division last season. The team seems to have got even stronger for 2012, keeping its core nucleus together while adding starter Trevor Cahill and outfielder Jason Kubel. Here are the projected starting rotation and closer situation for the impending season. Check out more franchises with our baseball predictions for 2012.

Projected Rotation

Ian Kennedy (RHP) - Kennedy stunned lots of individuals with his prime stats last year. After going just 9-10 with a 3.80 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in 2010, Kennedy bettered himself by recording an extremely inspiring 21-4 record with a dominant 2.88 ERA and 1.09 WHIP to end 4th in National League Cy Young Award voting. It's going to be hard to match the stats he had last year, but he should still be one of the select starters in the NL.

Daniel Hudson (RHP) - Hudson had a pretty good season of his own. In his first full year as a full time starter, he went 16-12 with a 3.39 ERA and 1.20 WHIP. If he continues to improve in 2012, Arizona will have a pretty scary pair at the top of the order.

Trevor Cahill ' (RHP) - Cahill can offer a steady arm in the middle of the rotation, especially if he will bounce back from a disheartening 2011 campaign. Cahill went 18-8 with a 2.97 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 30 starts with Oakland in 2010, but saw those numbers drop last season, going just 10-12 with a 4.16 ERA and 1.43 WHIP in 34 starts.

Joe Saunders (LHP) - Saunders finished just 12-13 last season, but his 3.69 ERA and 1.31 WHIP show that he pitched better than his record indicates. Still, it was his best season as a starter since going 17-7 with a 3.41 ERA in 31 starts with the Angels in 2008.

Josh Collmenter (RHP) - At the bottom of the rotation, Collmenter can be a pretty great option to have. In his first major league year, Collmenter went 10-10 with a 3.38 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in 24 starts. But his 4.00 ERA in the minors puts him at a risk for a fall in 2012.

Projected Closer

J.J. Putz (RHP) - Arizona had to have once been a little shocked with how well Putz threw in his first year with the team. The vet went out and converted 45 of 49 save opportunities with a 2.17 ERA and 0.91 WHIP. What is more galvanizing is he did that notwithstanding missing a month due to right shoulder tendinitis.
