Philadelphia Phillies Starting Pitcher & Bullpen Predictions

By Jack Jones

The Philadelphia Phillies took home their fifth uninterrupted National League East Division title with a team-record 102 regular season victories. But it was all for nothing, as the Phillies wouldn't even make it to the NLCS. In Game 5 of the National League Divisional Series against the St. Louis Cardinals, the Phillies would be defeated 1-0 to end their season in disappointment. The defeat wouldn't faze the Philadelphia faithful , however , as it seems like the fans remain wildly upbeat for their organization. Here are the Phillies projected starting pitchers and closer situation. There are a few guys on this list who will be favored in the NL Cy Young predictions.

Projected Staff

Roy Halladay (RHP) - The 34-year-old vet showed no signs of wearing down in 2011. The star went 19-6 with a 2.35 ERA and 1.04 WHIP. He's as galvanized as ever to win a championship, and he had a career-high 220 K's last season.

Cliff Lee (LHP) - Lee had a record of 17-8 with a 2.40 ERA and 1.03 WHIP. Nonetheless he had a stretch of games where he had ludicrous success. He allowed three runs in a span of 10 starts and also threw an impressive six shutouts and set a career-high 238 strikeouts on the year.

Cole Hamels (LHP) - You know that you have one of the best staffs of all time when your third-best starter is Cole Hamels. The lefty is just now entering the prime of his career, and went 14-9 with a 2.79 ERA and 0.99 WHIP last year.

Vance Worley (RHP) - Worley stunned lots of individuals last year, when the rookie went 11-3 with a 3.01 ERA and 1.23 WHIP. At only 24 years old, he has got a ton of potential waiting to be tapped, but lots of good young pitchers struggle in their 2nd year.

Joe Blanton (RHP) - Injuries limited the bloke to a career-low eight starts last season. He's the one Philly pitcher who opposing groups will be excited to see. He has career numbers of 4.32 ERA and 1.35 WHIP.

Projected Closer

Jonathon Papelbon (RHP) - Philadelphia signed the former Boston Red Sox closer to a profitable $50 million contract. Papelbon averaged 36 saves during the past 6 years in Boston. Look for Papelbon to save 45-plus games this year, especially with the starting pitchers the Phils have.

With such a solid pitching staff it will be tough for opposing teams to score runs against Philly in 2012.
