2012 NY Mets Lineup Overview

By Jack Jones

The NY Mets have gone from a decent franchise in the National League East to one of the worst. With a disappointing offense, it will be tough to see them compete for a postseason berth this year. Let's take a look at the lineup to see who is expected to produce for the franchise. Have a look at our hitting lineup rankings to see who we do believe will put up massive stats in 2012.

Projected Lineup

Josh Thole (Catcher) - Thole does not have a whole lot to offer, as he is a liability on defense and can't do much with his bat. He has hit just 6 homers in 595 career at-bats. Although he's still relatively young and has room to get better, he has to improve on nearly every aspect of his game in order to do that. He batted just .268 last year, but he was much more close to .300 in the 2nd half of the year.

Ike Davis (First Base) -Before coming down with a severe ankle sprain and a bone bruise that cut his year to just 36 games, he was putting up near-All-Star hitting stats of .302 with 7 homers and 25 RBI. If he will remain healthy, 2012 can be his year, and he has the potential to put up All-Star stats over a full year, particularly with the new dimensions of Citi Field.

Daniel Murphy (2nd Base) - His 2011 year was cut short because of his poor fundamentals in fielding ground balls. The converted outfielder's defense isn't where the Mets want it to be, but they are desperate to get Murphy's batting average into the lineup. He hasn't got plenty of power, but he batted .320 in 109 games last year.

Ruben Tejada (Shortstop) - Now that Reyes has left the Mets for the Marlins, Tejada has the chance to become the starter full-time. The 22-year-old showed some of his potential when he hit for a .284 batting average and.360 OBP in 328 plate appearances last year.

David Wright (3rd Base) - The Mets will need Wright to be on the field instead of in the training room if they want to contend. He played in just 102 games last season, which cut his numbers to .254 with 14 home runs and 61 RBI. If he will be able to find some way to remain healthy, we could see a dramatic spike in his numbers in 2012.

Jason Bay (Left Field) - When he came over from the Boston Red Sox, the Mets had soaring expectations for Bay, but he's been a huge disappointment so far. In his last year with the Red Sox in 2009, he hit 36 homers with 119 RBI. Coming over to NY, Bay has had 18 homers and 104 RBI in the past 2 years combined.

Andres Torres (Center Field) - The Mets signed Torres away from the San Francisco Giants in the offseason to make him their day to day center fielder. Torres does plenty of nice things on defense , but for him to actually make a change in NY, he must get his offense back in top form. Back in 2010, he hit .270 with 16 homers and 63 RBI. Last year nonetheless , he was deplorable, batting just .221 with 4 homers and 19 RBI.

Lucas Duda (Right Field) - Duda truly came on strong toward the end of last year. He batted .311 with 10 homers and 41 RBI in his last 235 at-bat. At only 25 years of age, Duda still has the potential to become a big-time threat and contributor in the middle of the Mets lineup for years to come.
