Hitting Preview For The 2012 Washington Nationals

By Jack Jones

If the Washington Nationals are ultimately going to contend in the National League East they are going to need gigantic things out of the lineup. Let's have a look at who is predicted to start and contribute in their batting order. Take a look at our 2012 MLB season predictions to see how we see the teams ending up.

Batting Order

Wilson Ramos (Catcher) - Coming of a solid rookie season, the 24-year-old came fourth in the NL Rookie of the Year voting. He hit .267 with 15 home runs and 52 RBI in just 113 games last year.

Adam LaRoche (First Base) -LaRoche never really got his year going as the vet dealt with a shoulder injury in spring training that stopped his year in May. The Nationals are querying at the moment if LaRoche has absolutely recovered from his injury, because when at full strength he has the skill to hit 25 homers and drive in 85+RBI.

Ian Desmond (Shortstop) - The Nationals hope that Desmond is the answer on their search to find their leadoff hitter. As of now though, he's providing more question marks than answers. He hit just .253 with an on-base % of .298 last year. He did get better as the season went on, but he has a lot to prove if he wants to claim the leadoff spot for the Nationals.

Danny Espinosa (2nd Base) - Espinosa started off his rookie season with a bang when he had 16 homers before the All-Star break. He nevertheless ran into a problem when he finished the year with just a .239 average and 21 homers.

Ryan Zimmerman (3rd Base) - Zimmerman had his year cut short because of a torn abdominal muscle resulting in him playing just 101 games. He would go on to post career-lows in homers with 12 and RBI with 49. He hit 58 homers and drove in 191 runs in the prior 2 years so I predict him to bounce back enormous in 2012.

Michael Morse (Left Field) - Morse got better and better as the season wore on. He hit .289 with 15 home runs and 41 RBI in 98 games in 2010. But in 2011, Morse did even better as he exploded for 31 home runs with 95 RBI and an impressive .303 batting average. Now that Zimmerman is coming back healthy and hitting before him, expect Morse to replicate those numbers in 2012.

Roger Bernadina (Center Field) - Bernadina has the talent and potential to be an everyday player, but he has fought to assemble it all. In 91 games last season he batted an underwhelming .243 with seven homers and 27 RBI. Washington signed Mike Cameron as a security-net, but both might actually ride the pine if the Nationals make a decision to bring up the 19-year-old star Bryce Harper.

Jayson Werth (Right Field) - Werth wishes to figure it out if he would like to remain in the Nationals lineup. After batting .281 with 63 homers and 184 RBI in two years with Philadelphia, Werth disappointed batting just .232 with 20 homers and 58 RBI last season. He has demonstrated that he can provide gigantic stats, so there is great hopefulness in the Nationals staff that he can figure in out in 2012.
