2012 Colorado Rockies Lineup Preview

By Jack Jones

The Colorado Rockies were one of the most disappionting groups in the majors last year. This group still has a large amount of talent on the offensive side of the plate. Let's take a look at the guys they are going to be sending up to bat this year. If you would like to know our thoughts on more teams, have a look at our MLB season projections article.

Projected Hitters

Ramon Hernandez (Catcher) - Veteran free agent Ramon Hernandez will take over for starter Chris Ianneta behind the backstop till top talent Wilin Rosario is deemed prepared to take the spot. Hernandez batted .282 with 12 homers and 36 RBI in 91 starts with the Cincinnati Reds.

Todd Helton (First Base) - At 38 years of age, Helton's best games are definitely behind him, but he proved that he could be a usable fill in initially base on both the offensive and defensive side in a robust 2011 year. Helton batted .302 with 14 homers and 69 RBI in just 124 games. If Helton can provide similar figures in 2012, the Rockies will be very OK with the veteran.

Marco Scutaro (Second Base) - It seems as if the Rockies have eventually explained its issues at 2nd base after dealing for Scutaro in late January. The veteran infielder batted .299 with 7 homers and 54 RBI in 113 games with Boston last year. If he will remain healthy and provide similar stats in 2012, then he can be a major contributor for Colorado in 2012.

Troy Tulowitzki (Shortstop) - After another solid season, it looks as if Tulowitzki has cemented himself as one of the very finest general shortstops in the game today. He hit .302 with 30 home runs and 105 RBI last year, and he currently has three straight seasons of a minimum of 27 home runs and 90 RBI. At the age of 27, Tulowitzki still has room to grow, while already becoming one of the best shortstops in the game.

Casey Blake (3rd Base) - At this point in his career, the Rockies are hoping they can get something positive out of the 38-year-old third baseman. He still has what is required to hit 20 homers with 75 RBI if he will be able to stay healthy, but at this point in his career, I simply do not think he will be able to keep fit for a full year. In just 63 games last season, he hit .252 with 4 homers and 26 RBI.

Carlos Gonzalez (Left Field) - Gonzalez put up a pretty nice 2011 year after putting up big time stats in 2010. He batted .295 with 26 home runs and 92 RBI in just 127 games, and while those stats are great in their own right, Gonzalez hit a phenomenal .336 with 34 homers and 117 RBI in 2010. At the age of 26, he can still bounce back and supply similar if not better stats than he had in 2010.

Dexter Fowler (Center Field) - The Rockies definitely has something to be excited about, as their leadoff hitter batted .288 in the second 1/2 the year. The kid has a large amount of potential waiting to be tapped as he ended 2011 with 35 doubles and 15 triples, regardless of just having 5 homers on the season.

Michael Cuddyer (Right Field) - After spending most of his career with the Minnesota Twins, Cuddyer agreed a profitable three-year contract with the Rockies. Colorado is hoping he can become a big-time threat in the middle of its lineup. In 139 games with the Twins last season, Cuddyer batted .284 with 20 homers and 70 RBI. He should also benefit from playing most of his games in Coors Field.
