The Baseball Memorabilia Business Has More To It Than Cards

By Ian Tate

Trading cards are just a part of what keeps baseball collectible fans ticking. Baseball caps, baseballs, and bobble heads are among the other things now gaining popularity in the sports memorabilia market these days.

Of course the best kind of baseball collectible is the one you were able to secure for yourself - having a baseball player sign an autograph is a memory you won't soon forget.

But for the most part, a lot of baseball collectibles are obtained as gifts or through the Internet. Another way that memorabilia can be acquired would be through tradition - for instance, a baseball signed by Joe DiMaggio could be passed from generation to generation to generation, while increasing in value.

It's just the monetary value of the memorabilia that makes it so special. You can't beat that feeling of nostalgia when holding or looking at baseball collectibles - baseball has been America's pastime for over a century and a half and continues to be one of our most popular sports.

Baseball fans, in general, aren't too concerned about Dodgers vs Giants in the '50s or Mets vs Braves in the '80s, for instance - they just look at the value of the baseball collectible, regardless of the associated team.

There once was a time when cards were the be-all and end-all of every baseball memorabilia collector, though times have certainly changed. Other baseball collectibles that are quite popular nowadays include pins, pennants, baseball caps, and classic uniforms.

Anything carrying an autograph from a player, such as a cap, ball, or glove is a prized possession when it comes to baseball collectibles. Bobble head dolls reached their peak in the 1950s and are highly sought-after these days - these remind old-timers of the era when baseball gave us the likes of The Mick, "Say Hey", and the Duke, just to name a few of the legends.

Some fans like to approach their baseball collectibles from the standpoint of team memorabilia, focusing on an entire assortment of Yankee or Red Sox souvenirs. But most are still focused on certain players, regardless of which team he played for, as long as he ranks among the game's legends.

While modern day figures may not fetch as much as the ones who made this game so popular in the beginning, that hasn't deterred loyal fans from scooping up keepsakes from the headliners of today. Regardless how you go about it, baseball collectibles are a great pastime and a great investment, but also something that can increase as you pass them on from one generation to the next.
