Determining The Prices Of Baseball Collectibles

By Alison Heath

How many of you have stopped to ask what factors come into play when determining the prices of baseball collectibles? There are many factors that come into play in determining the value of a piece of baseball memorabilia.

The first is the demand for the player or team representing your keepsake. If you specialize in baseball collectibles such as cards, then you want to make sure you're paying a fair price for them.

When considering the price of any baseball collectible that has to do with a certain player, make sure you know his record and statistics. Is he in the Hall of Fame? Is he a record breaker of some sorts who shattered a seemingly insurmountable feat?

It's a bit riskier when dealing with rookie baseball collectibles, as a rookie baseball player could easily turn into a bust before you know it. Proceed with discretion because once again, it is almost impossible to accurately predict a rookie's career trajectory.

Hall of Famers, like Mickey Mantle and Roberto Clemente, for instance, are sure to fetch a high value with their baseball collectibles. These are two players who were beloved by their home fans and stayed with the same team for their entire major league career, making their memorabilia especially valuable. Due to their winning ways, the New York Yankees' team collectibles are usually more valuable than others.

The condition of the baseball collectible is another important factor in its price and value. Mint condition cards, of course, are a great deal more valuable than those that are folded, creased, or smudged even the slightest bit.

Another aspect of what makes a baseball collectible priced right is whether or not it's a hard to find or limited edition. Common cards that are part of the basic set wouldn't cost as much as special cards, for instance.

At the end of the day, it is you, the collector, who would play the biggest part. What is this particular baseball collectible worth to you? Have you searched long and hard for this item, perhaps since you were a kid playing Little League ball? Or is this something you won't lose sleep over?

All sorts of memorabilia, including baseball collectibles, have several factors determining its value - the demand, how the owner values it, and how prospective buyers may value it. It always helps to research online, or to buy pricing guides or a Beckett's magazine to get an idea of how much certain items cost around the globe. Another good source online would be independent dealers and online auctions - search multiple sources to get the most accurate value for the collectible you wish to buy or sell.
