Baseball is Back for Another Season of Games, Rookie Prospects and Pennant Races

By John Casson

After a thrilling victory by the San Francisco Giants to win their first ever World Series in San Francisco, baseball fans are excited about the upcoming season. While the Giants have a tough road ahead of them, since no National League team has repeated since the Cincinnati Reds did in 1975-76, the combination of pitchers Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum may prove hard to beat. Other teams plan on making a run for it though and analysts have noted the Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox, who both boosted their roster in the offseason, as the teams to watch out for this year.

In 2010 rookies Jason Heyward and Buster Posey amazed fans and proved themselves as superstars. Now, many are wondering if they will rise to greatness again or if these players may see a slump in their performance. Also newcomers Brandon Belt, of the San Francisco Giants, and Dustin Ackley, of the Seattle Mariners, want to make their own mark for the new year and, with a season of surprises last year, baseball fans are definitely wondering what's in store for the new talent.

With significant changes to rosters in the offseason including a dream team of pitchers arriving in Philadelphia with Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay, and Roy Oswalt, many analysts and fans are wondering if high budget teams could possibly buy a World Series.

Opponents of that argument frequently cite the Tampa Bay Rays and the San Francisco Giants that don't have monster payrolls but have reached the World Series. Yet the debate over money still rages on, with owners every now and again threatening to impose a salary cap to the chagrin of players and big budget teams alike.

Whatever the outcome, the path to the World Series is always a thrilling one; full of rising talent and heartbreak. Last year the playoffs produced an unlikely star in Roy Halladay as he got a no-hitter in the post season, his second on the year. This year stars should be born and may be reborn as the fans and players alike hope to make 2011 a memorable season.
